New Sword Preview by not-really-living New Sword Preview by not-really-living
[Double Edit] Something I forgot to do was credit the initial design, since most certainly I couldn't have made it without *The-Argonian's concept drawing. [link] Be sure to thank him for the design if you really like it.

Being a preview and all, it's of course going to be small. The problem is that I don't have the computer time to render the full-sized image, which is 2880x1620px. This render alone took about an hour, and the full-size render I estimate would take almost a whole day (most of which is just for the AA).

I don't know why the AA takes so long for this image specifically. Few of my other renders did take more than a few hours for the 32 AA samples I usually have.

[Edit] I just realized this is my first just-Blender scene, meaning the only modeling program used is Blender 2.63. I love it.

This is a really beautiful composition here of lighting and shapes. The sharp blade laying over soft, round shapes while the rough, somewhat "imperfect" looking like cube reminds the viewer where all these come from: formerly unshaped, hard materials, melted into bars before they got reforged into something thin and delicate like the blade.
Also it's not clear of those little globes are "just" marbles or actually waterdrops, preserved into their shape.

The lighting matches perfectly with the composition and the bright green color is a really nice eye catcher there (though I wonder how it would look like if the green color would be darker and the already darker parts having a white/pearl color instead and the golden elements more shiny and thicker.)

Really nice work here.
You know you catched my attention because of a response to my comment on a whole different story, but this 3 Render here is a really nice work.

Thank you very much. It seems that I put just enough time and effort into this one for people to like.

Okay, as cool as this looks, I can't help but notice the relatively low polygon count, why not just create a simple black and white version of the engravings on the blade, as well as the basic rope pattern and bumpmap the surfaces with it, that way you can still apply the same texture map to it, but the detail will be even more incredible, and then lighting effect will actually, say, work. And another thing that bothers me, if that is supposed to be green glass, it is thoroughly unconvincing, especially when compared with the perfectly modelled glass spheres.

The main thing I intended this to be used for was a game model, so the low-poly is fairly necessary. I actually made more than I wanted to, so this slightly more detailed (model-wise) than originally planned.

The problem was that I'm still not knowledged enough to work out the bugs (the in-game failure of all my work: [link] ). As I move along, I'll figure the problems out and overcome them.

Being my first Blender-only model that I've been serious on, I'm surprised you don't have more to critique on. Next time around I'll definitely take your words into consideration.

Two steps forward.

Okay, I forgot that most game engines are not optimized for rendering bump maps or for ray-tracing through glass. So that explains most of what I was critiquing.

The sword does utilize normal maps, though it's a bit difficult to tell from such a small image. I may alter the value so it's more apparent in the full render.
