An Elder Scrolls RetrospectiveI've recently started playing Morrowind again. There's something magical about that game that draws me back in even after years of playing. It started around 2006. My older brother had recently bought the then brand new Xbox 360, and so he gave us his Xbox 1 (fuck Microsoft and their horrible naming schemes. The first one will always be Xbox 1 to me.), and with it, a bunch of games, including Morrowind. Being the young edgy teenager I was back then, I brushed the parchment-colored box aside for more flashy games like Star Wars: Republic Commando, Halo 2, etc.
Eventually I had beaten those games enough times to not want to see them even in my peripheral vision, and so I looked through the limited game library, because poor as hell, and saw it. I didn't think much of the game, but the descriptions on the back intrigued me. That was the day my gaming life changed forever. That was the day I had thrown myself into the Elder Scrolls universe. a dangerous hallucinationThe light coming through the window was bright,
much too bright.
Even though my eyes were closed
I could see it-
The skin of my arms prickled,
sweat dripped from my brow.
It was two in the afternoon but…
the sun was setting
through the window facing east.
I should have seen the hutch,
shelves lined with bone china
decorated with delicate leaves and vines.
I was so thirsty
and reaching for cups that should have been there.
Instead I found a billboard of butterflies,
the colors raging
more than any rainbow
I'd ever seen.
Their wings fluttered and flashed
yet somehow they moved in slow motion.
I wanted to stand,
wanted to reach out and touch them but…
I couldn't move,
and yet I laughed
ignoring my dry mouth
and the tingling in my feet.
There was a tempest
on the rise
and in my blood.
A sugar rush disguised
as a riot of butterflies
and they were swarming me.
